It’s hard for any fiberglass boat to beat that classic look and feel of a varnished mahogany boat. but it’s hard for a wooden boat to be the multisport vehicle a modern fiberglass model can be. wood has come a long way, baby, but it’s still going to require more maintenance than fiberglass.. Pressure treated plywood. common plywood that has been pressure treated with chemicals. this treatment prevents the wood from decaying or rotting. can also discourage insect damage. pressure treatment with chemical compounds does not waterproof the plywood. continuous exposure to water will leach the preservative chemicals from the wood.. Mix and apply fiberglass filler, to eliminate any air gaps between the plywood and fiberglass and round off the edges of the plywood. total time: 45 minutes. (note – if you’d like to improve the final looks with a smoother finish, allow the filler to harden completely and then spend an additional 30 minutes grinding it down).. 
plywood boat vs fiberglass When i speak of covering the outside of plywood boats with fiberglass, i use the term generically; you can use other fabrics such a dynel or polypropylene, but fiberglass gives the best combination of price, ease of application, ready-availability, and protection in my opinion. whichever fabric you select, the reasons for applying the covering. Poor quality plywood. the main issue with using a non-marine plywood is the eternal problem of time. given sufficient time and use it may be that the protective fibreglass layer becomes damaged allowing water to permeate the surface and begin to rot the underlying plywood. if the plywood is required structurally then this becomes a messy problem indeed..
